Dedication:
This story is dedicated to Franny, whose inspiration to me is Endless Over Time. And, with out whom, I'd never know what it is to be a Fan Of Lois and Clark.
FADE IN:
1 INT. LOIS'S JEEP - NIGHT 1
Lois's jeep is parked in front of Metropolis General. Lois and Clark are inside.
LOIS
Do you really care about what happens to *us* Clark?
CLARK
I *do* Lois… it's just that…
LOIS (interrupting)
Your attention span rivals a snow crab? What is this, some new "fear of intimacy" quality you've acquired?
CLARK
It's not like that, Lois. You don't know everything about me, and if you did, this all would make more sense.
LOIS (frantically)
Which will never happen since you don't stick around long enough for *me* to say how *I* feel!
CLARK
(softly)
That is what I am trying to do right now…
(beat)
…Lois.
LOIS (sarcastically)
Ohh… Lucky me!
CLARK
It's simple. I don't like having to compete for your attention with Scardino.
LOIS
There is no competition. Only difference is that with him, I can reach the periods in my sentences without a disappearing act.
Clark sighs and looks around himself as if his eyes were following a quick crazed fly. He has to do something and he has to do it *now*. Awkward silence, then…
CLARK
I guess I'll never really be comfortable about telling you this.
LOIS
Telling me what? Spit it out Clark or else I'll disappear!
SCARDINO (OS)
I hope you kids are playing nice in there.
LOIS
Daniel!
Scardino appears outside the driver's side window as…
SCARDINO
Was I interrupting something?
LOIS CLARK Yes! Yes!
SCARDINO
(wide eyed from the reaction)
OK, OK… no problem.
As Scardino leaves we see Clark's troubled face.
CLARK
And you think my timing is bad…
LOIS
Maybe we should talk about this some other time.
CLARK
Fine… I don't want to talk any more either.
Two shot of Lois and Clark, each staring out the window and into the sky. "I Only Have Eyes For You" faintly starts on the radio. A CLOSE-UP on Lois reveals a tear forming in her right eye. Clark tries to steal a glance at Lois, he succeeds and notices her sadness. Clark makes an 'enough already' face, and quickly turns off the radio while…
CLARK
Lois, drive.
LOIS
(in a daze)
Huh? What do you mean, Clark?
CLARK
Just put your foot on the floor. I don't care where you take us, just leave this place.
LOIS
(not too thrilled)
Fine…
Lois starts the ignition and pulls off. Both Lois and Clark are looking straight ahead. Their faces show anything but happiness.
CUT TO:
2 EXT. BACK STREET OF METROPOLIS 2
A PAN SHOT following Lois's jeep going by. When the camera stops, it quickly veers down to reveal a copy of the Daily Planet flickering in the wind.
CUT TO:
3 INT. LOIS'S JEEP - MOVING 3
Lois is paying attention to the road, an empty look on her face. Clark is futzing with a pen in his hands, as if he's trying to relieve his own tension. Clark gives a heavy sigh as…
CLARK
I think I owe you an explanation…
(beat)
and I owe it to you tonight, Lois.
Lois looks concerned over to Clark, then back on the road…
CLARK (cont'd)
If I go one more day dealing with this obstacle I've put in our relationship, it will tear us apart. I know it.
Lois and Clark have, at this point, left the city. Clark points out the window as…
CLARK
Lois… pull over there.
Lois does…
CLARK (cont'd)
Just park on the side. I want to talk somewhere.
CUT TO:
4 EXT. SIDE OF A BACK ROAD OUTSIDE OF METROPOLIS 4
They park the jeep and they both get out. The doors close simultaneously.
LOIS
Where are you taking me?
CLARK
A place I have gone far too many times. You'll see.
Clark leads Lois to a path which traverses some wooded area. Lois is cautious and takes her steps very slowly. However, she still tries to keep up with Clark's swift pace. You can tell he's been here before.
CUT TO:
5 EXT. EDGE OF METROPOLIS GORGE - NIGHT 5
The gorge is very deep. A very husky tree lies on it's side at the edge. It appears to be very worn as if from being sat on many times. Out towards the gorge, nothing can be seen but the full sky of stars.
LOIS
Swift place. Why do you come here?
CLARK
(beat)
Lois… every time I'm confused, every time I don't know what is going on between us, and every time you and I just weren't working, I came here at night. I'd come here… and I'd just sit here and think. Looking out into the stars in the sky, I would try to figure things out, hoping that all the tranquillity of this place would magically give me the realization I needed, Lois.
LOIS
And… you'd come here and think about me?
CLARK
And how I felt about you, the things you said, the things I said. I would try to make one coherent whole of it, most of the time it just didn't work.
LOIS
So…
(she walks across the ledge passing right in front of Clark.)
…what did you bring *me* here for if this is your place to get away from things?
CLARK
I realized that every time I came here to get away…
Clark looks over to his side, to where Lois has just walked.
CLARK (cont'd)
…I actually wanted you to be here so I could talk things out. I also realized tonight that I've been doing too much thinking and not enough doing. And tonight I am going to do…
Clark gets up slowly. CLOSE UP of Lois, her face spells 'what next'. Clark turns to Lois, takes a deep breath then…
CLARK
Every time I left you standing, every time I left you cold, every time I had you talking to the wall…
Lois has five tons of anticipation written on her face. She's almost shaking.
CLARK (cont'd)
It…
Clark squiggles his tie…
CLARK (cont'd)
was…
Clark throws his jacket to the ground…
CLARK (cont'd)
because of…
Clark rips open his shirt to reveal the big red 'S'…
CLARK (cont'd)
*this*!
Lois covers her mouth, her eyes are bigger than pool balls. She drops her purse to the ground, arms just weakly flailing at her side.
LOIS
I… Clark… is it really?
Clark removes his glasses from his face, giving a close mouthed Superman grin and Baby Huey look to Lois.
LOIS
Oh my *god* it is!
Lois looks off to her right and up into the sky. This time the tear is coming from her left eye. She shows her teeth and laughs as her eyes peer into the stars while…
LOIS (cont'd) The two greatest things in my entire life…
Lois wipes a tear from her left cheek…
LOIS (cont'd)
(with feeling)
…turned out to be the same thing.
She turns to Clark, who is still in the same pose. PAN following Lois run towards Clark. We can see more of her teeth now, the tears have stopped. Lois appears light on her feet, she looks to be floating towards him. Lois embraces Clark tightly, as if to be freeing all her tension at once. She quickly takes a step back, letting go of Clark.
LOIS
I just have one question.
CLARK
Well, what is it?
LOIS
Clark, Super… whoever you are… now that I know.. you… will *you* still be both things for me?
CLARK
(looks deep into Lois's eyes)
Lois, I want to be *everything*… for you. And now I can… now I really can.
Lois shows those big whites again, instantly reacting to Clark's assurance. Lois gives a nod, then throws herself back at Clark. It begins as just a warm strong embrace. Clark and Lois simultaneously lift their heads back. Lois looks down at Clark's chest, and rubs her hand seductively across the big red 'S', Clark watches intently. A long stare is shared between the two. Whereas most looks induce one to swim in the other's eyes, think drowning for this one. Their heads come closer… closer… closer… Then as they are about to pucker up AN OVERHEAD CIRCLING OVERTOP, their lips CLASH. The circling view of every angle of this masterpiece DRAWS CLOSER AND CLOSER.
Quickly back to our original TWO SHOT. Lois pulls her head back, eyes still closed, mouth still open. She comes to, looks at Clark as…
LOIS
Clark?
CLARK
Yes, Lois?
LOIS
In case you are wondering…
Lois pauses…
CLARK
Yes…
LOIS
Now, I can truly say..
CLARK
Go on…
LOIS
That… I only… have eyes
(she pecks him once)
for you!
Re-engage the kiss, just as powerful if not more. The stars become apparent in the background of their throbbing silhouette.
