Summary: A story set during the episode "Whine, Whine, Whine." What might Lois and Clark have been thinking and feeling when they tried to call each other?

This story takes place during "Whine, Whine, Whine". Most of the action was written for the episode by Kathy McCormick and John McNamara, but without dialog. While listening to my favorite cassette, I got the idea to write their possible thoughts. I hope you enjoy this piece and comments, as always, are welcome.

Lois Lane unlocked her apartment door. She dropped her purse and briefcase on the couch while pushing the door shut with her foot. It had been a long day. Now, she just wanted to go to bed and forget everything. She went into the bedroom and changed into a long pink satin nightgown and matching robe.

Meanwhile, in his own apartment, Clark Kent was thinking of Lois. He knew she was angry at him for leaving during lunch today. He wanted to stay with her but he was needed elsewhere as Superman. He saw a picture of himself and Lois on the coffee table and lifted it to gaze at Lois. He smiled wryly when he thought of just what Lois would do to make him pay for running off again.

Back at Lois's, she finished brushing her hair. After making sure that the alarm was set, she draped the robe over a chair and climbed into bed. Reaching over to the nightstand, she turned off the light and lay back.

Clark put the picture back on the table and stretched out on the couch. The fact that he was Superman was the only thing he'd never told Lois. He knew he'd have to tell her soon. He just wasn't sure how to say it. Plus, he didn't want her to think that she was in love with him just because of his super abilities. He wanted her to love him as Clark Kent.

Lois sighed and turned the light back on. She realized that she had too much on her mind to sleep. She looked at the telephone and thought about calling Clark, but decided against it.

Clark looked at his phone and thought about calling Lois. He decided that she probably wouldn't want to talk to him. But he needed to talk to someone. He lifted the receiver and dialed a local radio station.

Lois tried to read, but couldn't concentrate. Tossing the book aside, she turned on the radio.

"For anyone who's just tuned in, you're listening to Delilah on WSUS. We're here until midnight taking your calls, listening to your stories and playing your requests. Next on the line is Grace."

"Hi, Delilah."

"What's on your mind tonight, Grace?"

"I wanted to request a song for my husband, Scott."

"And how long have you been married?"

"One year today."

"Congratulations! I guess he's real special to you."

"Oh, yes. Before I met him, my work was my whole life. He made me see that there's so much more to live for. And now, we're expecting our first baby."

"That's great. What can I play for you?"

"We'd like to hear 'Being Alive' from 'Company.'"

"Well, happy anniversary, Grace and Scott, and here's to another 50 years together."

Someone to hold you too close

Someone to hurt you too deep

Someone to sit in your chair

And ruin your sleep

And make you aware of being alive

Someone to need you too much

Someone to know you too well

Someone to pull you up short

And put you through hell

And give you support for being alive

Being alive

Make me alive, make me confused

Mock me with praise, let me be used

Vary my days, but alone is alone,

Not alive

Somebody hold me too close

Somebody force me to care

Somebody make me come through

I'll always be there

As frightened as you of being alive

Being alive, being alive

Someone you have to let in

Someone whose feelings you spare

Someone who, like it or not

Will want you to share a little, a lot

Of being alive

Make me alive, make me confused

Mock me with praise, let me be used

Vary my days, but alone is alone,

Not alive

Somebody crowd me with love

Somebody force me to care

Somebody make me come through

I'll always be there

As frightened as you to help us survive

Being alive, being alive

Being alive, being alive

Lois listened to the words of that song and realized what she'd been looking for her whole life. She knew he wasn't perfect, but that's what made life worth living. She wanted to be Grace and she suddenly knew who her Scott was.

Clark hung up the telephone and picked up the remote for his stereo. He tuned the station to WSUS and heard the last verse of "Being Alive." He smiled, because that song always reminded him of Lois.

Lois lowered the volume on the radio and reached for the telephone. She stared at the receiver for a moment before dialing Clark's number.

At the same instant, Clark reached for his phone and dialed immediately. Like it or not, Lois was going to talk to him. They had too much to discuss.

Lois was disappointed to hear a busy signal on Clark's line. At least it proved that he was home and awake. Without a second thought, she decided to get dressed and go see him.

Now that he'd decided to tell her everything, Clark was angry to get a busy signal. He slammed the receiver back onto the phone and inadvertently smashed the unit to pieces.

Lois grabbed her keys and left her apartment without turning off the radio.

"We're back and our next caller is Clark. What's your story tonight?"

"Well, there's this woman I've been seeing …"

"And what's her name?"

"Lois."

"How do you feel about her?"

"I love her. No question, I love her with all my heart. The problem is I have a huge secret that I'm afraid to tell her. I don't know how she'll react."

"And how does she feel about you?"

"Well, she hasn't said anything, but I'm pretty sure she loves me, too. But my secret pulls me away every time she wants to have a serious discussion about our feelings."

"You know, if Lois IS the one, you have to tell her. Whatever your secret is, if she loves you, she'll understand. And it's better that she hear it from you than some other way."

"I know. I guess I just needed to hear someone else say it."

"Good. Now, is there a song we can play for her?"

"Yes. I'd like to hear 'Glory of Love.'"

"Okay. This is to Lois from Clark. Here's hoping she listens with an open heart."

Tonight it's very clear and we're both standing here

There's so many things I want to say

I will always love you

I will never leave you alone

Sometimes I just forget, say things I might regret

It breaks my heart to see you crying

I don't want to lose you

I could never make it alone

I am the man who would fight for your honor

I'll be the hero you're dreaming of

We'll live forever knowing together

That we did it all for the glory of love

You keep me standing tall

You help me through it all

I'm always strong when you're beside me

I have always needed you

I could never make it alone

I am the man who would fight for your honor

I'll be the hero you're dreaming of

We'll live forever knowing together

That we did it all for the glory of love

Just like a knight in shining armor

From a long time ago

Just in time I will save the day

Take you to my castle far away

I am the man who will fight for your honor

I'll be the hero that you're dreaming of

We're gonna live forever knowing together

That we did it all for the glory of love

We live forever knowing together

That we did it all for the glory of love

We did it all for love

We did it all for love

We did it all for love
