Alternate Final Scene of 'Metallo'

By Elva Young (elva@uhunix.uhcc.Hawaii.Edu)

Summary: A scene that might have taken place after the ending of the episode "Metallo."

Well, this is in response to the recent "Metallo" episode on L&C, since I was VERY dissatisfied with the last scene, I, like other members of this list, wrote my own version. enjoy! (Note: I'm just typing what comes to mind; very little editing, if any!)

A Very Merry Fairy

***

Lois didn't know how long she was lying down on her bed, hugging her pillow, but it didn't seem very long after her abortive attempt to call Clark when she became aware of a knocking on her door. She glanced at her clock radio: 10:30 p.m. Wondering who could be visiting at this late hour (maybe Lucy wants to chew me out over her picture in the paper, even though her back is facing the camera, she thought), Lois made sure her sash was tied tight before going to the door to stare through the peephole. Clark's distorted face stared back. Think of the devil, she thought, as she unlocked the door.

"Hi. Was I bothering you?"

"Hi yourself. No, as a matter of fact I just tried to call you."

"Oh really? Why?"

"Umm… No reason, just had the urge." Then Lois noticed—"What are you hiding behind your back?"

"Well…" Clark seemed flustered, but gamely continued. "I was just out, uh, shopping, and I suddenly thought, 'She *did* say to *surprise* her,' so I figured, heck, why not!"

With that, he presented, with a flourish, a carton of rocky road yogurt, decorated with a ribbon.

"Clark! You shouldn't have," Lois managed before snatching the prized carton with both hands.

"Well, I felt bad not getting you any the other day, so I stopped by the yogurt place and got you that gallon, which they *just* happened to have a special on."

"Oh, really? I was under the impression that since this was such a popular flavor, it hardly ever goes on sale…"

Clark looked down. "Well—"

"Never mind, thank you very much. Won't you come in?"

"Umm, I'd like to, but I was supposed to call my folks in about half an hour, and I don't want to raise your phone bill—"

"That's all right. I'll just have to save this gallon for later."

"Hey, wait a minute! That's for *you*."

"If it's for me, then I can do anything I want with it, right?"

"Yeah."

"So, I'll just save this for the next time you come over. You *do* want to come over sometime in the future, don't you?"

"Ah, yeah, that would be neat."

"Fine." Impulsively, she gave him a big hug. "Thanks again."

He held her tightly. "I should be thanking you."

She looked up. "Oh, Clark, let's not start that now. Besides, I owe you one for — for the way you stood up for me against Dil—"

"Hey, let's not start *that* now." He stroked her hair, then, before he lost his nerve, kissed her on the forehead. "I'm fine, everything's fine now."

Lois held back the sniffle and nodded. "Yeah." She stepped back. "I'm glad you came by."

"Me too." Reluctantly, Clark stepped back. "I guess I'll be going now."

"Yeah."

They stared at each other for a long moment, then, tearing her eyes away, Lois grabbed the door handle. "Goodnight, Clark."

"Goodnight." He smiled, then turned away and left.

Lois dreamily closed the door, barely remembering the locks, and found herself looking at her open window. She slowly crossed over to it, remembering how Superman had gently took her hands before she could hold him, remembering the expressions on his face as he talked to her. She touched the windowsill for a moment, then, decisively, she closed and locked it. Then she got ready to turn in for the night.

THE END

(or is it?)
